…Keyamo says rehabilitation and extension will improve safety, accommodate larger aircraft ahead of peak Christmas travel season
SUN OCT 11 2026-theGBJournal|The Federal Government will temporarily shut Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for approximately 25 days from October 20, 2026, to allow for critical runway rehabilitation, resurfacing and extension works aimed at improving aviation safety and operational capacity.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo announced the planned closure, saying the decision followed consultations with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and other key stakeholders in the state and the South-East.
The project, being undertaken in partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government, is expected to address deteriorating runway pavement, extensive surface cracks and potholes, while extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, including wide-body jets, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.
Keyamo said the intervention was necessary to restore the runway to a safer, more reliable condition and strengthen the airport’s capacity to handle rising passenger traffic and flight movements.
The timing is significant, coming ahead of the Christmas travel season, when air travel to Owerri and other parts of the South-East traditionally increases.
The minister acknowledged that the temporary closure would inconvenience passengers and other airport users but stressed that aviation safety could not be compromised.
He said the Federal Government would continue working with the Imo State Government, airlines and other stakeholders to coordinate the project and minimise disruption.
Passengers scheduled to fly through the airport during the closure have been advised to contact their airlines for information on cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
The confirmed closure and reopening dates will be communicated through official channels.
Keyamo commended Governor Uzodimma and the Imo State Government for their cooperation, describing the project as an example of collaboration between different levels of government to improve aviation infrastructure and strengthen regional connectivity.
He said the runway rehabilitation and extension formed part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to safer, more efficient and modern aviation infrastructure across the country.
