NGX adds N3.7 trillion in market value as MTNN, Seplat, ZenithBank drive 2.36% weekly rally

SAT SEPT 05 2026-theGBJournal| The NGX All-Share Index and Market Capitalization appreciated by 2.36% and 2.40% to close the week at 246,992.44 and N159.559 trillion respectively.

As a result, the month-to-date return moderated to 1.1%, while the year-to-date return settled at +58.7%. On market activity.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of NGX Industrial Goods and NGX Sovereign Bond indices which depreciated by 0.35% and 0.36% respectively.

Strong gains in MTNN (+5.0%), SEPLAT (+10.0%), ZENITHBANK (+6.3%) and FIRSTHOLDCO (+3.4%) propelled the market performance.

A total turnover of 4.360 billion shares worth N210.331 billion in 223,284 deals was traded this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange, in contrast to a total of 2.507 billion shares valued at N123.223 billion that exchanged hands last week in 173,561 deals.

Trading in the top three equities, namely Fortis Global Insurance Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc and Access Holdings Plc (measured by volume), accounted for 2.287 billion shares worth N35.232 billion in 20,975 deals, contributing 52.46% and 16.75% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 3.580 billion shares valued at N88.635 billion traded in 99,488 deals: thus contributing 82.10% and 42.14% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 188.039 million shares worth N15.343 billion in 24,518 deals. Third place was the Services Industry, with a turnover of 142.292 million shares worth N2.020 billion in 14,007 deals.

Sectoral performance was broadly positive, as the Oil & Gas (+9.1%), Insurance (+3.8), Banking (+3.6%) and Consumer Goods (+3.5%) indices closed higher, while the Industrial Goods (-0.3%) index closed lower for the week.

In Friday’s session, the NGX ASI and market capitalisation gained 0.25%. The positive sentiment was driven by gains in NB (+9.93%), ABBEYBANK (+10.00%), and ELLAHLAKES (+9.09%) which offset losses in BETAGLASS (-8.21%), HBMNG (-3.36%), and NGXGROUP (-5.45%).

Trading activity strengthened, with total volume traded increasing by 416.66% to 2.24bn units, while transaction value rose by 150.55% to N73.41 billion. UBA (-0.33%) led the volume chart with 312.42 million units, while SEPLAT (0.00%) led the value chart, with trades worth N32.24 billion.

Market breadth was negative at 0.94x, reflecting a higher number of losers relative to gainers, as thirty-one (31) stocks declined against twenty-nine (29) advancers.

REDSTAREX (-10.00%) emerged as the session’s top decliner, while ABBEYBANK (+10.00%) led the gainers’ chart.

Meanwhile, the NASD OTC market closed Friday’s session on a negative note, as the NASD Security Index (NSI) declined by 1.22% to 4,414.02 points. Market capitalisation also declined by 1.22% to N2.65 trillion, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return moderated to 24.56%, from 26.10% in the previous session.

Trading activity weakened, with traded volume decreasing by 76.78% to 166,461 units, while transaction value fell by 72.81% to N11.96 million. A total of 23 trades were executed, representing a 66.67% decrease from the previous session.

On the performance chart, SDAFRILAND (+9.05%) led the gainers, while SDCSCSPLC (-10.99%) emerged as the session’s top loser.
