SUN JUNE 28 2026-theGBJournal| Stephen Eustaquio struck in the second minute of stoppage time to earn Canada a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday, sending the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.
The decisive goal came in the 92nd minute at a packed Los Angeles Stadium after a tense, hard-fought contest in which both sides created chances but struggled to find a breakthrough.
Canada’s historic qualification prompted head coach Jesse Marsch to hail his players as “Canadian heroes.”
The match pitted two nations seeking uncharted territory, with neither side having previously reached the World Cup knockout rounds. South Africa, appearing in their fourth FIFA World Cup, made one change to the side that featured in their previous match, while Canada made four alterations to their starting lineup.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos, aged 74, became the oldest manager to guide a team into the World Cup knockout stage, adding another milestone to his distinguished coaching career despite his side’s narrow defeat.
Both teams began cautiously, with fierce midfield battles dominating the opening exchanges. South Africa registered the first shot on target in the fifth minute when Teboho Mokwena latched onto a long pass from defence, but his effort was comfortably gathered by the Canadian goalkeeper.
Canada responded with an aggressive high press and earned their first corner in the ninth minute following sustained attacking pressure.
Despite Canada’s greater share of possession, South Africa remained disciplined defensively and threatened on the counterattack.
As the match appeared destined for extra time, Eustaquio arrived with the decisive finish in stoppage time to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.
