MON JULY 27 2026-theGBJournal| Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received Babcock University’s Leadership and Service Award in recognition of his public service, using the occasion to challenge the institution’s 2026 graduating class to develop innovative, evidence-based solutions to Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
The award was presented during the institution’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony for the conferment of degrees and prizes held on Sunday.
The event was attended by 3,400 graduating students, academics, parents, and distinguished guests.
Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Breaking New Ground: Faith, Grit and the Work of New Beginnings,” Governor Sanwo-Olu described leadership as a responsibility that demands integrity, accountability, and service to humanity.
Addressing the graduating class, known as the 2026 Undergraduate NOVA Class, Sanwo-Olu urged young Nigerians to engage constructively with government and contribute ideas capable of delivering sustainable development.
Reflecting on his years in office, the governor said his administration had been shaped by crises including the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests, arguing that leadership is ultimately defined by the ability to navigate periods of adversity.
He also highlighted what he described as key achievements of his administration over the past seven years, citing sustained investments in transport, education, healthcare, housing and technology.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos State’s budget had expanded from less than ₦900 billion in 2019 to ₦4.44 trillion in 2026, while the state was recognised by the Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index in 2025 as the world’s fastest-growing technology ecosystem.
The governor said his administration had established two new state universities, was completing what he described as the largest children’s hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, introduced digital learning across public schools and delivered thousands of housing units.
The Governor also commended Babcock University for its contributions to higher education and for producing graduates who have excelled in various fields.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Miss Simisola Abore described the academic journey as challenging but rewarding. She urged her colleagues to uphold the values of the institution and give back to the community.
The convocation also celebrated academic excellence as Miss Amosu Oluwapelumi emerged the Overall Best Full-Time Graduating Student and received a cash prize of ₦10 million.
She attributed her success to consistency, discipline and hard work.
