THUR OCT 08 2026-theGBJournal|The Nigerian equities market closed Wednesday’s session in the red, as the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 0.07% to close at 250,096.75 points, as the market continues its retreat from record level.
Market capitalisation equally fell by 0.07% to settle at N162.36 trillion.
This brought the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at -0.4% and +60.7% (from 60.83%) respectively.
The negative sentiment was driven by losses in TRANSCORP (-2.7%), GTCO (-0.8%), UBA (-1.2%), ETI (-1.5%), OANDO (−3.23%), DANGSUGAR (−2.14%) and WEMABANK (−3.02%), which outweighed gains recorded in CMFC (+9.86%), CADBURY (+2.93%) and ROYALEX (+8.00%).
Market activity weakened, as total volume traded fell by 22.83% to 447.00 million units, while total value traded declined by 36.37% to N22.95 billion. ZENITHBANK (+0.22%) led both the volume and value charts, with 34.90mn units traded and transactions worth N4.74 billion.
Market breadth was negative at 0.84x, reflecting a higher number of decliners relative to advancers. TRIPPLEG (+9.96%) led the twenty-seven gainers, while SOVRENINS (−7.60%) led the thirty-two losers.
The NASD OTC market closed the day’s session on a negative note as well, as the NASD Security Index (NSI) fell by 0.21% to 4,392.52 points. Market capitalisation also declined by 0.23% to N2.64 trillion, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return fell to 24.04%, from 24.30% in the previous session.
Market activity weakened, as total volume traded declined by 61.82% to 1.13 billion units, while total value traded decreased by 11.90% to N155.30 billion.
FCWN led the gainers’ table, advancing by 0.17%, while FCP led the losers’ chart, declining by 8.69%.
At currency market, the naira depreciated against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/NGN pair rising by 0.07% to close at ₦1,331.76/$.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves increased marginally by 0.005% to $54.98 billion as of 6 October 2026, extending the recent improvement in the country’s reserve position.
