WED OCT 07 2026-theGBJournal|Peter Obi today, visited the Nigerian Air Force facility in Abuja to sign the condolence register following the crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft.
The aircraft carrying 32 officers crashed in Ondo State on Monday, triggering a search and rescue operation as authorities raced to establish the fate of those on board.
Mr Obi, who had earlier expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those who died, used the visit to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the country’s armed forces and other security agencies.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate said those serving in the military “put their lives on the line to defend our nation and protect our people”.
“We must never take their service and sacrifice for granted,” he said.
Mr Obi said his visit to the Nigerian Air Force facility gave him “another opportunity to reflect” on the risks faced by members of the armed forces in the line of duty.
His visit followed his earlier reaction to the crash, in which he said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the incident.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the Nigerian Air Force and to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” he said.
Mr Obi also paid tribute to the military personnel who died, describing them as “courageous men and women” who devoted their lives to defending Nigeria and safeguarding its people.
“Their service and sacrifice must never be overlooked,” he said.
He prayed for the families of those who died and for the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“May God grant eternal rest to those who have departed, consolation to their families, and strength to the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Mr Obi said.
He also prayed for the safety of serving personnel, saying: “May God continue to watch over all who serve our country and protect them as they carry out their duties.”
The visit comes as attention remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the aircraft crash and the impact of the incident on the Nigerian Air Force and the families of those who died.
