TUE APRIL 07 2026-theGBJournal| Members of the United Nations Security Council are preparing for a crucial vote today on a Bahrain-led draft resolution aimed at safeguarding maritime security and ensuring freedom of navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Bahrain-led draft includes a resolution authorizing action with limited defensive force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has effectively blocked.

The meeting comes amid escalating tensions and growing threats to freedom of navigation along one of the world’s most critical energy transit corridors.

Around one-fifth of global oil and a significant share of liquefied natural gas pass through it.

Since hostilities began, ship traffic has dropped sharply, while crude oil prices have surged – hovering around $110 per barrel.

Led by Bahrain, the draft resolution seeks to reinforce international commitments to maritime safety and stability as concerns mount over disruptions to global trade and energy supplies.

The outcome of the vote is expected to signal the international community’s readiness to respond to the worsening security situation at sea.

Meanwhile, hostilities continue across the Middle East, as displacement remains high, aid access is constrained, and economic and security impacts continue to ripple far beyond the region.
