SAT AUG 08 2026-theGBJournal| Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed security agencies to go after criminals who vandalised the Festac-Alakija Bridge.
“Lagos will not tolerate any act of vandalism because it is barbaric and criminal,” Mr. Sanwo-Olu said, adding: “I have been informed by officials of the Office of Infrastructure who visited the bridge that the structural integrity of the bridge is intact and remedial work will be executed immediately to protect the columns.”
Anyone who is found to be culpable in this horrendous, shameful and condemnable incident will surely face the law.
Lagos has no place for such barbarism and acts of violence against our critical infrastructure and other facilities. Lagosians are enjoined to keep an eye on public facilities to protect them against senseless attacks.
Lagos announced Friday that 27 suspected hoodlums have been arrested following the discovery that critical structural components of a newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija had been vandalised, raising concerns over public safety and the protection of state infrastructure.
The discovery was made during an enforcement operation ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to clear the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of various infractions, including environmental pollution, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, and the use of highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways for commercial activities.
Officials found that suspected vandals had removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other structural materials from beneath the bridge.
These components are essential to the integrity and safety of the infrastructure.
The Lagos State Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab described the incident as a serious safety risk that could undermine its significant investment in critical transportation infrastructure.
A coordinated midnight operation involving personnel of the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force was subsequently carried out at the site, leading to the arrest of the 27 suspects.
The suspects are expected to be prosecuted in accordance with applicable laws in Lagos State, Wahab said.
