TUE AUG 25 2026-theGBJournal| President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies to launch an immediate, coordinated operation to rescue victims of the latest mass abduction in Niger State, as the country’s persistent insecurity crisis once again puts the government’s security strategy under scrutiny.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Tinubu directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other relevant agencies to work together to secure the release of those abducted and ensure that everyone taken captive is accounted for.
The president condemned the abduction and killing of civilians, describing the perpetrators as “enemies of peace and enemies of humanity” and warning that they would not be allowed to escape justice.
”I am outraged by the abduction and killing of innocent citizens by criminal elements in the state,” Tinubu said, while extending his deepest condolences to the families of those who were killed ”in this barbaric assault.”
Beyond the presidential declaration, the latest attack exposes the grim reality facing communities across parts of Nigeria: despite repeated government assurances and security operations, armed groups continue to find opportunities to attack vulnerable populations, abduct civilians and spread fear.
For families caught in such attacks, presidential assurances offer little comfort unless they are followed by the safe return of their loved ones.
Tinubu sought to reassure the victims’ families that they were not alone, saying the government would not rest until those abducted were brought back safely.
He also directed the Service Chiefs to provide him with regular briefings on the rescue operation until all the victims have been accounted for.
That directive places a significant responsibility on the security agencies. The immediate priority is the safe recovery of the abducted citizens.
The Niger State incident is another reminder of the recurring pattern of insecurity that has plagued Nigeria for years: an attack occurs, civilians are killed or abducted, the government condemns the perpetrators, security agencies launch operations and promises are made that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
That cycle has fuelled anxiety among citizens and raised difficult questions about the ability of the state to protect people in vulnerable communities, particularly those far from major security formations.
Tinubu’s declaration that “terror will not cow Nigeria” is an unmistakable statement of resolve.
The president has pledged that the government will defend Nigerians, protect communities and uphold the sanctity of human life. He has also promised federal support for Niger State in recovery, relief and security reinforcement.
