Former NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso raises his ADC membership card

…The resignation comes on the heels of a similar move by NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who exited the party over the weekend and pitched his tent with the ADC.

MON MAR 30 2026-theGBJournal| The political shake-up within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has intensified as former Kano State Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, formally resigned his membership, citing the country’s evolving political landscape and the need to realign his ambitions.

His exit marks another high-profile blow to the party amid growing internal uncertainty.

”The decision comes after deep reflection and wide consultations with my political associates, supporters, and well-wishers across the state” Gwarzo said in a statement seen by theG&BJournal.

”Recent political developments and the evolving political landscape have made it necessary for me to review my membership in the interest of the people, and the future of our state and the nation,” he adds.

He said his decision is also informed by patriotic consideration and the need to pursue a political path that align his vision for good governance, democratic values, and sustainable development ”of our dear state.”

Gwarzo is widely expected to announce his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is fast emerging as a preferred destination for a wave of recent political defectors seeking a new platform ahead of future electoral contests.

His move underscores a broader recalibration underway across Nigeria’s opposition space.

The resignation comes on the heels of a similar move by NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who exited the party over the weekend and pitched his tent with the ADC.

Kwankwaso’s departure has triggered ripple effects within the party, with loyalists and key figures reconsidering their positions.

Analysts say the twin exits could significantly weaken the NNPP’s political footing, particularly in its northern strongholds, while boosting the ADC’s momentum as a potential coalition hub.

As alignments shift and alliances take shape, the coming weeks are expected to redefine the balance of power ahead of Nigeria’s next political cycle.
