
FRI MAY 22 2026-theGBJournal| Nigeria and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral ties, with both countries pledging deeper collaboration across key sectors including trade, investment, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, mining, infrastructure and security.
The commitment was made during a high-level meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai.
At the meeting both sides highlighted growing economic opportunities and underscored the importance of stronger partnerships to drive sustainable development, technological innovation and regional stability.
Amb. Bianca underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration in intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism efforts, and regional security cooperation, noting that insecurity and violent extremism continue to pose challenges to economic stability and livelihoods within the region.
The discussions also focused on attracting greater Canadian investment into Nigeria’s fast-growing sectors, while enhancing cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, education, climate resilience, youth empowerment and people-to-people exchanges, reflecting a renewed push to elevate Nigeria-Canada relations to a more strategic level.
In his remarks, Honourable Randeep Sarai commended Nigeria’s strategic importance on the African continent and acknowledged the growing strength of Nigeria-Canada relations, particularly through the vibrant Nigerian diaspora community in Canada.
He reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting development initiatives focused on education, climate resilience, women’s empowerment, youth development, and sustainable economic cooperation.
The Canadian Secretary of State further expressed his country’s readiness to strengthen partnerships with Nigeria in areas such as renewable energy, mining, nuclear technology, artificial intelligence, data and infrastructure.
