THUR APRIL 16 2026-theGBJournal| Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken a major step towards easing urban mobility with the arrival today, of a new set of 24 train cars to bolster the Lagos Red Line fleet.
The new set of train cars is expected to significantly boost passenger capacity, cut waiting times, and improve the daily commute for hundreds of thousands of residents.
”This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering a modern, efficient, and reliable transport system, noting that the expansion aligns with broader efforts to tackle congestion and support economic productivity in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
The Red Line, commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 29, 2024, runs 27 kilometres from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, linking key districts including Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, and Iju.
Since the commencement of commercial operations on October 15, 2024, the line has emerged as a critical component of Lagos’ mass transit network, with projections to move up to 500,000 passengers daily as service frequency improves.
The addition of the new train cars is expected to accelerate that target, reduce overcrowding, and enhance safety and comfort.
The Red Line also complements the Blue Line corridor, forming part of a long-term rail expansion strategy designed to integrate with bus systems and reduce reliance on road transport across the state.
