FRI APRIL 10 2026-theGBJournal| The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election, following widespread backlash from political stakeholders, civil society groups, and concerned citizens who questioned both the timing and transparency of the initiative.

The postponement follows the Commission’s meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) today, during which, among other issues, the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise was considered.

Critics had argued that the exercise, coming amid heightened political tensions and internal party disputes, risked disenfranchising eligible voters and creating confusion ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

INEC describes the voter revalidation exercise is a critical component of the Commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.

”It is designed to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register.

The exercise also aims to provide an opportunity for registered voters to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required,” the Commission addes.

The Commission’s decision to step back underscores the growing sensitivity around electoral processes in Nigeria and highlights the need for broader consultation, clarity, and public trust in any reforms affecting voter participation.
