FRI AUG 07 2026-theGBJournal| Authorities in Lagos have arrested 27 suspected hoodlums following the discovery that critical structural components of a newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija had been vandalised, raising concerns over public safety and the protection of state infrastructure.
The discovery was made during an enforcement operation ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to clear the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of various infractions, including environmental pollution, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, and the use of highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways for commercial activities.
Officials found that suspected vandals had removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other structural materials from beneath the bridge. These components are essential to the integrity and safety of the infrastructure.
The Lagos State Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab described the incident as a serious safety risk that could undermine its significant investment in critical transportation infrastructure.
A coordinated midnight operation involving personnel of the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force was subsequently carried out at the site, leading to the arrest of the 27 suspects.
The suspects are expected to be prosecuted in accordance with applicable laws in Lagos State, Wahab said.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and pledged decisive action against vandalism, environmental violations, and other criminal activities that threaten public safety and welfare.
