TUE JUNE 02 2026-theGBJournal| Gunmen abducted the younger sister of former Nigerian Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu and her two 12-year-old twin sons in the southwestern city of Ibadan on Wednesday

The latest attack adds to heighten concerns over worsening insecurity in Oyo State.

The assailants struck at about 7:30 a.m., according to eyewitnesses, in the Elewura area of Challenge, a densely populated district in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, according to eyewitnesses.

The victims — a 43-year-old woman and her sons, Peter and Paul — were reportedly seized in front of their residence before the attackers fled.

Police authorities had not immediately provided details on the whereabouts of the victims or whether contact had been established with the kidnappers.

The kidnapping adds to a growing wave of abductions and violent attacks that have unsettled residents across Oyo State, a region traditionally viewed as more secure than parts of northern Nigeria where kidnappings for ransom have become widespread.

The latest incident comes just weeks after the abduction of more than 40 teachers and students in Oyo State, an attack that triggered nationwide protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Educators across the country staged demonstrations demanding stronger security measures and the safe return of their colleagues and pupils, reflecting mounting public frustration over the government’s inability to curb kidnapping gangs operating across the country.

The killing of a teacher during recent attacks further intensified public outrage, with labour groups and civil society organisations warning that insecurity was increasingly threatening access to education and the safety of school communities.

Security agencies have launched investigations into the latest abduction.

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in kidnappings over the past decade, with criminal gangs targeting students, commuters, farmers, community leaders and prominent individuals for ransom, posing a major security challenge for authorities despite repeated government pledges to tackle the crisis.
