MON MAR 30 2026-theGBJournal| In a move that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), marking a dramatic turn in the fortunes of the party he helped elevate to national prominence.

The development comes amid growing speculation over internal rifts and shifting political alliances ahead of future electoral contests.

”Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” Kwankwaso said Sunday while announcing hos shock exit from the NNPP.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, had been widely regarded as the party’s most influential figure.

His departure is expected to significantly alter the NNPP’s political calculus, particularly in northern Nigeria where his grassroots support base has remained formidable.

While details surrounding his next political move remain unclear, analysts believe the resignation could signal a broader realignment within the opposition space.

As political actors begin to reposition, Kwankwaso’s exit from the NNPP may trigger fresh negotiations, alliances, and power plays in the lead-up to the next election cycle.
