THUR SEPT 24 2026-theGBJournal| The Federal Government has extended the rehabilitation of the First Niger Bridge, with critical structural works continuing to ensure the facility is safe and durable before it is reopened to traffic.
The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, gave the directive during an inspection of the bridge at the Onitsha Bridge Head, noting that the vandalised bolts and nuts had been replaced while the stolen expansion joint had been manufactured and brought into the country for installation.
He also ordered additional works, including structural repainting, solar-powered streetlights, CCTV surveillance linked to the Second Niger Bridge and a comprehensive assessment of the bridge above and below the water level.
Representing the Governors of Delta and Anambra states, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, commended the pace and quality of the rehabilitation, noting that the earlier directives for the replacement of damaged components had been implemented. He also appreciated motorists for their patience as the intervention progresses.
