THUR MARCH 06 2025-theGBJournal| The Federal Government Thursday launched a landmark organ transplant guideline, a significant milestone in regulating the practice as well as improving organ donation process and transplantation practices.
The guideline aims to entrench a system based on voluntary donation and transparent allocation, given the frequent exploitation of the vulnerable and poor Nigerians who, in recent times, have fallen victim of organ traders.
The new guidelines sets out rules for establishing and coordinating organ and tissue transplantation services in the country.
According to the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, it underscores the federal government’s commitment to saving lives through ethical organ transplantation procedures.
The Minister of State, represented by the Ministry’s Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Jimoh Salaudeen, noted that the organ transplant practice was more than a medical procedure.
He said ”it is a life-saving intervention that offers renewed hope to patients battling end-stage organ failure.”
The new guideline emphasizes transparency and adherence to international best practices and explicitly prohibits organ sales.
The guideline also encompasses kidney, cornea, gamete, liver, bone marrow, storage and embryo donation as well as surrogacy.
