MON, MARCH 02 2020-theG&BJournal-A common condition affecting women of reproductive age is hyperandrogenism (excess androgen). Excessive androgen in women can manifest in many ways, the most common and recognizable symptoms are acne, hirsutism (excessive facial and body hair), masculine features and menstrual irregularities.
In 2015, acne ranked 8th in the list of most prevalent diseases in the world, with a global prevalence of 645 million people. Approximately 80% of women in Nigeria are affected by acne between the onset of puberty and 30 years of age. Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition with multifactorial pathogenesis, but the source is excess androgen levels in women which triggers the onset of this condition.
Hirsutism (excessive facial and body hair growth) which affects 5-10% of women in Nigeria is the excessive terminal hair growth in a distribution typically seen in adult men (face, lower abdomen, back, and thighs).
These conditions, if left untreated could result in serious health consequences such as insulin resistance, recurrent miscarriages and high blood pressure. It could negatively impact the quality of life through anxiety, depression and other psychological problems that affect women’s lives in ways comparable to arthritis or other disabling illnesses.
DKT Nigeria has introduced a new generation contraceptive pill, Dianofem that is effective in treating androgenic skin conditions such as acne and hirsutism.
