…Naira weakens
WED AUG 12 2026-theGBJournal| The NGX All-Share Index declined 0.73% to 246,723.57 points Tuesday, trimming its year-to-date gain to 58.55%, while market capitalization fell to N159.25 trillion.
The bearish sentiment was driven by losses in MTNN (-4.73%), DANGSUGAR (-4.11%), and TRANSCORP (-2.59%), which outweighed gains in CADBURY (+5.85%), FTNCOCOA (+9.88%), and SOVRENINS (+6.74%).
The pullback comes as investors assess two important market catalysts, the upcoming CPI reading which will shape expectations for inflation and the path of monetary policy, and today’s N700 billion NTB auction which is expected to test demand for government debt and could influence yields and the relative appeal of equities.
Trading activity strengthened during the session, with traded volume surging by 243.77% to 3.91bn units, while transaction value increased by 19.85% to N32.38 billion.
ACCESSCORP (+0.71%) led the volume chart with 66.12mn units traded, while FIRSTHOLDCO (-1.41%) topped the value chart with N5.38 billion worth of transactions.
Market breadth closed at 1.00x, reflecting an even balance between gainers and decliners, with twenty-seven stocks advancing and twenty-seven declining. UPDC (+10.00%) led the gainers, while THOMASWY (-9.97%) was the biggest decliner.
The NASD OTC market also closed Tuesday’s session on a negative note, with the NASD Security Index (NSI) declining by 0.32% to 4,663.18 points. Consequently, market capitalisation fell by 0.32% to N2.80trn, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return moderated to 31.59%, from 32.01% in the previous session.
Trading activity strengthened during the session, with traded volume increasing by 108.97% to 1.12mn units, while transaction value rose by 69.49% to N10.18mn. A total of 35 trades were executed during the session.
On the performance table, SDNITROXGAS (+9.07%) led the gainers, while SDCSCSPLC (-11.00%) recorded the largest decline.
Meanwhile, the official FX rate depreciated by 0.3% to N1,364.79/USD.
