TUE MAY 12 2026-theGBJournal| Nigeria’s persistent failure to account for civilian deaths caused by military air strikes has once again come under scrutiny following the deadly bombing of Tumfa Market in Zamfara State.

Amnesty International has called for an urgent, independent investigation into the attack, warning that the continued lack of transparency and accountability is denying victims and their families justice, truth and reparations.

Dozens of survivors are currently receiving medical treatment after a military air strike struck the busy Tumfa weekly market on Sunday, 10 May 2026, reportedly killing more than 100 people.

Community leaders and relatives of victims disclosed that one affected village buried 80 people in a single mass funeral.

Amnesty International said the authorities must immediately investigate the incident and end what it described as reckless attacks on civilians.

The organisation stressed that communities already devastated by conflict in northern Nigeria continue to bear the heaviest burden of violence and insecurity.

According to eyewitness accounts, military aircraft bombed the market at a time when it was crowded with traders and residents, without any warning. Survivors described scenes of panic and devastation, with bodies scattered across the ground amid cries for help and pools of blood.

Victims injured in the attack were evacuated to General Hospitals in Zurmi and Shinkafi, while those critically wounded are being treated at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau.

Amnesty International further condemned the absence of transparent, independent and impartial investigations into repeated military air strikes and other alleged violations.

The organisation warned that the continued failure to hold those responsible accountable risks deepening public distrust in Nigeria’s institutions and security operations.
