THUR MAR 12 2026-theGBJournal| The Federal Ministry of Health through the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP), has intensified efforts to expand HIV prevention choices and strengthen Nigeria’s response to HIV.
The latest effort is the introduction of Long-Acting Injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a groundbreaking option designed to significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection.
The move marks a major step in the country’s efforts to accelerate progress toward ending the HIV epidemic by offering more convenient and effective prevention tools.
Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable medication administered just twice a year, provides a new alternative for individuals at risk of HIV who may struggle with adherence to daily oral PrEP medications.
Health officials say the innovation could dramatically improve uptake and consistency in HIV prevention, particularly among key populations and vulnerable groups.
The Ministry officials also noted that expanding prevention choices is critical to reducing new HIV infections in Nigeria, which remains one of the countries with a high HIV burden globally.
By integrating Lenacapavir into existing prevention programs, authorities aim to strengthen community-level protection while supporting national targets under the global HIV response framework.
Public health experts believe the rollout of the injectable PrEP option could transform HIV prevention in Nigeria by addressing barriers such as stigma, pill fatigue, and inconsistent access to medication.
The Federal Ministry of Health said it will work with development partners, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure broad access and effective implementation across the country.
