SUN MAY 24 2026-theGBJournal| President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formally emerge as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election, receiving the party’s certificate of return and flag at a high-profile ceremony at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

While the event underscores the President’s firm grip on the ruling party and signals the commencement of his re-election campaign, it also marks the beginning of a crucial political battle that will be fought less on party structures and more on the everyday realities confronting millions of Nigerians.

The presentation of the APC flag and certificate of return comes at a time when the Tinubu administration faces mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible progress on some of the country’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity, high inflation, unemployment, rising poverty levels, and the cost-of-living crisis.

Although the administration has consistently argued that its economic reforms—including the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange market liberalization—were necessary to prevent fiscal collapse and place the economy on a sustainable path, many Nigerians are yet to feel the benefits of those policies in their daily lives.

The President enters the 2027 race with significant political advantages.

The APC remains the dominant political force nationally, controlling a majority of states and maintaining substantial influence within the National Assembly.

The endorsement of Tinubu by APC governors, party leaders and key stakeholders signals a united front that could strengthen the party’s electoral machinery ahead of the polls.

However, political analysts argue that electoral success in 2027 will depend less on internal party cohesion and more on whether the government can convince Nigerians that the sacrifices demanded by its reforms are yielding measurable results.

Inflation, though showing signs of moderation in recent months, continues to erode purchasing power, while food prices remain elevated across many parts of the country.

Job creation, particularly for the country’s growing youth population, remains a major concern.

Security is expected to be another defining issue in the election.

While security agencies have recorded successes against insurgent and criminal groups in some regions, challenges persist, including terrorism in the North-East, banditry in parts of the North-West, farmer-herder conflicts in the Middle Belt, and incidents of kidnapping across several states.

For many voters, improvements in security conditions will serve as a key benchmark for assessing the administration’s performance.

To regain and strengthen public confidence, analysts suggest that the APC and the Tinubu administration must focus on delivering visible improvements in three critical areas.

First, accelerating economic growth that translates into lower living costs, greater employment opportunities and increased household incomes.

Second, achieving measurable reductions in insecurity through enhanced intelligence gathering, security coordination and community-based policing initiatives.

Third, strengthening governance and accountability by ensuring that anti-corruption efforts, public spending and social intervention programmes produce results that citizens can directly observe.

Infrastructure delivery, power sector reforms, support for local manufacturing, agricultural productivity and expanded social protection programmes are also expected to feature prominently in the administration’s efforts to build a stronger case for a second term.

For the APC, the presentation of the presidential flag to Tinubu may signal the end of an internal nomination process, but it is also the beginning of a broader referendum on the party’s stewardship of Africa’s largest economy.

The coming months and years will likely determine whether Nigerians view the current administration’s reforms as difficult but necessary foundations for future prosperity, or as policies that failed to sufficiently alleviate the economic hardship experienced by millions of citizens.

As President Tinubu formally accepts the APC’s mandate to seek another four years in office, the central question confronting both the ruling party and the electorate remains whether the administration can convert economic reforms, political stability and security initiatives into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians before voters return to the polls in 2027.
