TUE, FEBRUARY 05 2019-theG&BJournal-The history of slavery and its effect on the African continent has been told by dozens of historians, economists, civil scholars, along with the travel and tourism departments of various African governments. It has always painted a painful toll to Africans and a prosperous benefit to the new world of Europe, America and the Caribbean cash crop plantations owners.
Never has a group of young children [an all-girl-crew] led by a 16 year old, taken the lenses off their cocooned safety net to learn first-hand by telling the story as they saw, felt, and tried to walk it.
This is the short story of Goree Island and the integral role it played in the brutal, but profitable transatlantic slave trade in the 1600s and 1700s. Produced and directed by 16 year old film maker and girl education advocate Zuriel Oduwole, the project which was sponsored by the government of Senegal would show in its full length format across libraries and civil organizations in the US, later in February as part of the black history month celebrations.
