Former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown said on Tuesday that the UN will launch the first humanitarian fund to provide education to children displaced by conflicts and disasters.
Brown, who is also the UN special envoy for global education, said that the fund will be officially launched during the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul next week.
He said that the fund aims at catering for educational needs of over 30 million displaced children worldwide.
“That it’s providing education so that many children worldwide will require 3.85 billion dollars over the next five years,’’.
“More than 100 separate funders, including governments, businesses and philanthropists, are expected to contribute to the fund, which is called Education Cannot Wait.
“We will be the first to bridge the gap between humanitarian aid and development aid – at present, education falls through the net.
“We believe that this fund will offer young people hope,’’ Brown said.
