…”The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace,” Guterres said
SUN JUNE 22 2025-theGBJournal| The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has posted a statement on his social media handle describing the United States’ bombing of three nuclear sites in Iran on Saturday as a ”dangerous escalation” following eight days of lethal strikes and counter strikes between Israel and Iran.
The UN Chief said he is ”gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today, reiterating that there is no military solution.
”The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace,” Guterres said.
”This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security. At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid spiral chaos.”
The U.S President Donald Trump announced the bombings from the White House at 10pm local time, saying that the United States has conducted airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
President Trump then warned Iran leadership to ”now make peace” and return to negotiations over its nuclear programme or suffer a far greater wave of attacks.
As the White House released some photos of the strikes early Sunday morning, the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned America to expect greater damage and heavier blows ever before.
The Iranian military has also vowed retaliation while Teheran said diplomacy is dead.
The Iranian authorities have equally released satellite images of the sites with more than 20 trucks seen evacuating the facilities President Trump said they were ”obliterated.”
Both the White House and the Iranian authorities are yet to released their assessment of the sites bombing.
