SUN 14 FEB, 2021-theGBJournal- The Former U.S. President Donald Trump was Saturday acquitted in his Senate impeachment trial with vast majority of Republicans holding together against the charge that he incited a mob on the Capitol on January 6.

He was acquitted after the Democrats who led the impeachment failed to garner the two thirds threshold set out in the Constitution. 57 Senators voted to convict while 43 voted to acquit. Only seven Republicans joined the Democrats to vote for conviction.

The Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell voted to acquit Trump but him slammed for being ‘’morally responsible,’’ for provoking the January 6 riots.

Trump declared victory in a statement he issued after the acquittal and said the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement has ‘’only just begun and that he has more to share in the near future.

‘’In the months ahead, I have much to share with you, and I look forward to achieve American greatness for all of our people,’’ the twice impeached former president said in the statement.

He thanked his Republican Party members in the Senate for standing ‘’proudly for the Constitution we all revere and for the heart of our country.’’

House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, on the hand denounced the senators who made the acquittal possible as a ‘’cowardly group of Republicans’’ and blamed McConnell for not allowing the House to deliver the impeachment charge to the senators while Trump was still in office.
