Type 2 Polio| Delta State targets vaccinating 1.8 million children, as outbreak response begins

SAT, 14 MAY, 2022-theGBJournal | Over 1,800,000 children between the ages of 0-59 months in Delta State are set to be vaccinated in the second round of the Outbreak Response.

It could be recalled that the state participated alongside other states in the federation in the first round from the 9th to 12th April 2022.

The Permanent Secretary Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency Dr Jude Winful-Orieke revealed this today during the State stakeholders Mobilization Committee meeting.

Dr Winful-Orieke said the aim of the Outbreak Response is to interrupt the circulation of poliovirus by immunizing every child under 5 years in the state with oral polio vaccine regardless of previous immunization status.

“Everyone seated here is strategic to the success of the campaign; the Traditional Rulers, Religious leaders, Market Men and women, Youths and Women leaders, line ministries, school owners, media and security personnel have a stake in the health indexes of the state. The burden of disease affects everyone, let’s ensure no child is missed Polio is a highly infectious and an untreatable disease that can result in permanent paralysis.”

On her part, the Director Social Mobilization Advocacy and Immunization, Dr Ngozi Orofuke reiterated Government’s commitment to eradicating vaccine preventable diseases and encouraged the mothers to ensure their children are vaccinated as it is the responsibility of the parents to protect their children.

Dr. Orofuke emphasized on the safety and potency of the vaccine adding that trained health workers visibly identified will be deployed in all 25 LGAs of the state immunizing children under 5 with the vaccine.

Stakeholders drawn from relevant line MDAs, civil society organizations, market leaders and other influential and opinion Leaders pledge to help sensitize the populace about the upcoming campaign.

The exercise will begin on the 14th of May through 17th with two days mop up and the strategy is house to House, schools, churches, markets places temporary post as health facilities.
