It was a tale of contrasts on Google Search this week as Nigerians trawled the web for messages to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on one hand and also kept an eye on the sad stuff, the terror attacks in Brussels; the passing of feisty lawyer, politician and civil rights activist, Dr Tunji Braithwaite; the loss of Dutch football legend, Johan Cruyff and the reported suicide attempt of American singer/ songwriter, Kehlani.
Other names on the Hot trends list are disgraced ex-Sunderland footballer and England International, Adam Johnson and Mavins’ rapper, Reekado Banks who also popped up on the radar, post that Headies brouhaha.
Nigerian Christians got their glad rags out and their spirits up this Easter in celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
It’s no surprise that Easter messages and Easter quotes were top of mind this weekend as people searched for creative and thoughtful ways to celebrate.
Elder statesman, lawyer and civil activist Dr. Tunji Braithwaite passed away on Monday. The founder of Nigeria Advance Party, (NAP), rose to prominence in 1983 when he became the presidential candidate for the party, which was one of 6 registered by the military junta.
Dr. Braithwaite was born in 1933. The last of 8 children, he attended CMS Grammar School in Lagos, before proceeding to the United Kingdom for his A levels and a degree in law. Braithwaite was admitted into Lincoln’s inn in 1958 and graduated as a barrister in 1960.
He is survived by 5 children and many grandchildren. Football lost an icon this week with the death of Dutch legend, Hendrik Johannes Cruyff who almost single handedly raised Dutch football from obscurity in the 1970s Regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, Cruyff’s style of play and ‘Total Football’ philosophy influenced a generation of players and coaches, including Pep Guardiola,Arsene Wenger, Eric Cantona and Xavi.
Ajax Amsterdam and Barcelona also developed youth academies based on Cruyff’s coaching methods. Cruyff was diagnosed with lung cancer on 2015. He died on March 24 in Barcelona.
He was 68. Rising R &B artiste, Kehlani, made the headlines for the wrong reasons last week, after the 20 year old attempted suicide and was placed on a 24 hour medical and psychiatric hold.
Kehlani had been accused of cheating on her boyfriend, Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kylie Irving with her ex-boyfriend and fellow musician, PartyNextDoor.
Wish you a swift recovery, girl It seems ex-Sunderland player Adam Johnson may be in some trouble if he doesn’t get moved to the general prison population at Victorian Armley Prison in Leeds, as soon as possible.
Inmates have warned that Adam, who was handed a 6 year jail sentence for kissing, groping and grooming a 15 year old fan, could be attacked by fellow inmates if he’s perceived as a sex offender.
Meanwhile, Johnson is still being bombarded with explicit messages from a couple of women.
Reekado Banks and Wizkid So Mavins newbie, Reekado Banks has called out his fans who have been comparing him with Wizkid, asking them not to disrespect Wizzy in their attempts to highlight their similarities.
Banks took to Twitter to remind people that WizKid is his mentor and one of Nigerian music’s greats.
Something funny has also happened to Reekado recently as some search engines have been mistaking his photos for his rival, YBNL Nation rapper, Lil Kesh. More drama ahead, anybody?
