TUE, DEC 19 2023-theGBJournal|A truce was reached on Monday among Rivers State political gladiators, led by fomer Governor Nyesom Wike and current Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to abandone their fierce battle for the control of politics and governance in the state, after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria.
The warring parties agreed to an eight-point draft aimed at restoring normalcy to the State following weeks of absurd power tussle that brought not only governance to a standstill but a palpable air of uncertainty and insecurity to the State.
The many areas of dispute were discussed with the President and his men including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila as well as former Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili and some traditional rulers from the state.
An eight-point agreement was drafted and the war lords and their henchmen surprisingly signed on to it.
They all agreed that;
1-All matters instituted in the Courts by the Governor of Rivers State, Fubara, and his team, in respect of the political crisis in Rivers State, shall be withdrawn immediately.
2-All impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State by the Rivers State House of Assembly should be dropped immediately
3-The leadership of the River State House of Assembly as led by Martin Amaewhule shall be recognised alongside the 27 members who resigned from the PDP
4-The remunerations and benefits of all members of the Rivers State of House Assembly and their staff must be reinstated immediately and the Governor of Rivers State shall henceforth not interfere with the full funding of the Rivers State House of Assembly
5-The Rivers State House of Assembly shall choose where they want to sit and conduct their legislative business without interference and/or hinderance from the Executive arm of Government.
6-The Governor of Rivers State, Fubara Shall re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of Assembly.
7-The names of Commissioners in the River State Executive Council who resigned their appointments because of the political crisis in the State should be resubmitted to the House of Assembly for approval.
8-There should not be caretaker committee for the local governments in Rivers State. The dissolution of the Local Government administration is null and void and shall not be recognised.
