FRI JUNE 07 2024-theGBJournal|Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal on Friday imposed a hefty N150 million fine on MultiChoice, and ordered it to provide one month free complimentary subscription to subscribers on DStv and Gotv platforms.
The penalty was imposed on the South African owned satellite television provider for contesting a court’s jurisdiction on a case filed against it on its recent price increases on its DStv and GOtv packages.
Justice Thomas Okosu led the three-man Tribunal that delivered the judgment.
Recall that MultiChoice and one of its Manager in Abuja, Mohammed Sani, was sued for disobeying an order of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) restraining them from increasing the DStv and GOtv prices beginning May 1, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit brought on April 29, 2024.
The restraining order was issued following an ex-parte motion brought by one Ejiro Awaritoma, counsel for the claimant, Onifade and a subscriber.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) was sued along as 2nd defendant alongside MultiChoice.
