WED, 17 AUG, 2022-theGBJournal| Nigeria has been thrown into darkness, including major industrial hubs and the Federal Capital Territory (FTC), and nearly all Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in the country have issued a notice of ‘’disruption of power supply’’.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) made good their threat of shutting down electricity nationwide as they began nationwide picketing of Transmission Stations across the country, following staff welfare and entitlement dispute.
Most of the DISCOs have sent out appeal to customers, hoping the dispute between the Union and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) will be amicably resolved as quickly as possible.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige today summoned an emergency meeting of the electricity Employees executive to try and mitigate further balkout.
The Union called the strike/picketing in response to what they say is the TCN’s ‘’Contravention of workers’ conditions and default on payment of entitlement,’’ and the alleged failure of the Federal Government to pay the entitlement of former staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in December 2019.
On August 15, 2022, the General Secretary of the Union, Joe Ajero issued a circular titled ‘’Call for Action,’’ to Senior Assistant General, Secretaries and Zonal Organising Secretaries directing them to ensure total compliance with the strike action. The circular also directed the aggrieved workers to picket the Abuja national headquarters of the TCN.
Last week, the TCN Management led by MD/CEO, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, had met with the Union executives at the National Joint Advisory Committee, and discussed the burning issues of staff welfare and issues that will positively impact the company.
