Syrian capital, Damascus falls to opposition fighters as President al-Assad reportedly flees the country

SUN DEC 08 2024-theGBJournal| Opposition forces has declared Syria free of President Bashar al-Assad rule with several reports early hours of Sunday saying the Syrian President has fled the country.

The 59-year old Assad has ruled country since 2000 following the death of his father Hafez al-Assad, who was the 18th President of Syria from 1971 until his death.

Some reports quoted local sources as saying that his plane was shot down near Homs, two hours from Damascus, after he was seen fleeing Damascus.

The head of the Syrian opposition coalition overseas, announced amidst the chaos that the country is ”free of al-Assad” to the Syrian people, after fighters took control of the heart of Damascus and declared a new era and invited Syrians overseas to return home.

The Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali has already declared his willingness to cooperate with the opposition, underscoring the capitulation of the 50-year long rule of the Assad family in Syria.

Photos of jubilation around the country and in Damascus has been widely circulated on social media. Videos seen by theG&BJournal heard people chanting Freedom! Freedom! as they celebrate end of the Assad regime they describe as the worst in history.

The opposition and the rebels are expected to make their first broadcast to the nation later on state television.
