Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Emefiele faces fresh probe

MON, JULY 31 2023-theGBJournal |President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a Special Investigator to investigate the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, the apex bank and related entities.

The President, in statement he personally signed, directed that aside investigating the CBN and Emefiele, the investigator is to immediately take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key government business entities, block leakages in the CBN and related government business entities and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishment, whether private or public.

The President appointed the CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Jim Osayande to lead the investigation. His appointment is with immediate effect and he is to report directly to the President.

The President announced Osayande’s appointment ”in accordance with the Financial Objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The President suggests that the probe is in continuation of the fight against corruption and directed that the investigator should use suitably experienced, competent and capable team and work with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to deliver on the assignment.

The investigation comes amid the current prosecution of the Emefiele who has been in the custody of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) since he was suspended by the President.
