THUR, APRIL 11 2019-theG&BJournal- It is still sketchy in Khartoum over the faith of President Omar al-Bashir. Speculation of his ouster is growing and Sudanese this morning across the country took to the streets in their thousands celebrating and convinced that he has gone for good after 30 years in charge of the country.
Witnesses say al-Bashir is now under house arrest and his personal guards replaced.
Reuters is reporting that he has stepped down and that consultation is under way to form a transitional government to run the country. Reuters quoted a ‘’government and provincial minister’’ on Thursday.
The armed forces chiefs are expected to present a report today according to news report. The military surprisingly were in the forefront protecting protesters since rallies started across the country to pressure al-Bashir, the former trooper who took power in a coup in 1989, to resign.
The protest began in December 2018 when the government tried to force through increase in bread price amidst fuel and cash shortages caused by economic crisis.
If Omar al-Bashir is forced out he will become the third head of state forced out by its military in the last 12 months, following Zimbabwe and Algeria.
