An educationist, Dr Mosumola Adelegan, said on Friday that the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ekiti State would worsen students’ performance in public examinations. The state NUT members are jointly on strike with the state workers demanding for improved conditions of service.

Adelegan said in Ido Faboro, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state that the impact of the prolong strike on students would be unfortunate.

“Results of public examinations in recent times have put the state at a disgraceful position that requires hard work and thorough academic rejuvenation.

“The strike by the key players who were expected to restore the lost glory in the education sector is worrisome because it will worsen the situation,’’ Adelegan said.

She appealed to the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to be rational in their struggle by allowing peaceful dialogue with government for quick resolution.

The educationist cautioned parties involved in the matter to put the interest of the state and its citizenry above whatever demands, appealing that the future of the students should not be toiled with.

Adelegan reminded labour leaders that not all parents could afford sending their children and wards to private schools.

According to her, history will not forget the labour unions if eventually the hope of the innocent students are tampered with.

She urged government to use all available approaches in resolving the strike issue so that the state could bounce back academically and financially.
