The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal, has called on telecommunications professionals to support government’s efforts in the fight against crime.

The call is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by Mr Mohammed Nakorji, the Assistant Director of Press in the Office of the SGF.

Nakorji said Lawal made the call when he received a delegation from the Association of Telecommunications Professionals led by its President, Mr Adede Williams.

The SGF told the delegation that the call became necessary because criminal activities today were perpetrated with the use of modern communication technology such as remote detonating devices.

He urged the professionals to come up with recommendations which government could use in the war against crime.

He assured the Association that his office was open to useful and implementable ideas that would further develop the telecommunications sector.

Earlier, Williams had told the SGF that the Association was a non-profit think-tank of practicing telecommunication professionals in private and public sectors.

The leader of the delegation acknowledged the contributions of the SGF to the Association as a practitioner and pledged to support him to succeed in his assignment.

In a related development, the SGF had assured the Government of The Gambia of Nigeria’s continued support.

Lawal gave the assurance when the Ambassador of The Gambia to Nigeria, Famara Gaye, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

He expressed delight over the cordial relationship existing between the two countries and commended The Gambia
for according courtesy and respect to the more than 30,000 Nigerians residing in that country.

Lawal, however, urged the Gambian authorities to take advantage of the huge market in Nigeria to improve trade relations, stressing that Nigeria was open to legitimate business.

Gaye commended the Federal Government for the technical assistance extended to Gambia over the years in various fields such as banking, aviation, teaching and judiciary.

He said “Nigeria will surely attain greater heights under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, whom I personally admire and regard as the President of the African continent.”
