Senegal swears in its youngest, openly polygamous President Diomaye Faye

TUE APRIL 02 2024-theGBJournal| Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been sworn in as President of Senegal at at Diamniadio new city exhibition center near Dakar, succeeding Macky Sall, who was head of state from 2012 to 2024.

At 44 years, Faye becomes the youngest and first openly polygamous President as well as the fifth president in the country’s history.

“Before God and before the Senegalese Nation, I swear to faithfully fulfill the duty of President of the Republic of Senegal, to observe as to scrupulously observe the provisions of the Constitution and the laws,” he said, with his right hand raised, before seven African heads of state including Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is co-chair of the ECOWAS, the regional Bloc.

Remarkably, Faye was freed from prison less than two weeks before the March 24 election, a beneficiaries of a political amnesty granted by outgoing President Macky Sall.

Following the election, the Constitutional Council of Senegal announced on March 29 that Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye had become an elected president. He secured 54% of the vote, ahead of his main rival Amadou Ba.
