WED, NOVEMBER 07 2018-theG&BJournal-The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has called on the officials of the Ministry of Education and its labour employment counterparts to quickly resolve all issues related to the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that all agreements between the disputing parties must be honoured.

Saraki’s call comes a day after the federal government promised to release N20 billion to the union to get them back on the negotiating table.

Participating universities in the strike declared Sunday by ASUU National Executive Committee has grown to include the University of Lagos which today will ensure total compliance with the executive directives.

ASUU is protesting poor funding of public Universities and the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement it signed with the federal government.

This is the second major strike within two years by the union. In August, 2017 the strike was triggered by what ASUU leadership called the abysmal level of implementation of the 2009 ASUU/Federal government agreement, the non implementation of the 2013 MoU and the shortfall in salaries which led to untimely lay-offs in some universities across the country.

One professor back then challenged the legislators to rise up and protect the country’s future by coming on the side of ASUU members that are educating the growing number of youths in the country. He argued that until there is sincerity in communication and an element of accountability entrenched in delivering on agreements, ASUU will be perpetually go on strike.
