…Approves report on investigation of subsidy money spent by NNPC
MON, APRIL 30 2018-theG&BJournal–The Senate on Thursday, April 26, 2018, said it received, considered and approved the report of its Committee on Public Accounts on the investigation of all subsidy money spent by the NNPC without recourse to National Assembly’s approval.
The report was presented by the Public Accounts Committee Chairman, Sen. Mathew Urhoghide (Edo South). The Senate said it adopted and approved the recommendations of the Committee which include the immediate stoppage of the illegal payment of Petroleum Subsidy, making proper request of petroleum subsidy to the National Assembly, the need to pay all outstanding arrears of petroleum subsidy owed petroleum marketers by the NNPC as well as the order to refund the sum of N216 billion paid for petroleum subsidy in 2016 and the urging of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts to recommend appropriate sanctions to persons responsible for the payment of petroleum subsidy through the back door.
The Senate said that its recommendations is to ensure transparency and accountability in spending public funds especially the amount spent to subsidize petroleum products by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
