THUR, 20 OCT, 2022-theGBJournal| The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, said Wednesday that the second Niger bridge was now completed and will soon be opened to the public for use, pointing out that what was delaying the commissioning was the construction of the link road to the bridge from both the Asaba and Onitsha axes.
“I can confirm that the second Niger Bridge itself is finished. People can walk through it now. What remains now is the link roads.” he said. According to the Minister, ‘’what remains is the 4 kilometer link road on the Asaba side. The 7 kilometer road that links the bridge, and the Onitsha-Owerri interchange is ready.’’
Fashola explained the delay at the National Press Center, Radio House Abuja, during the media briefing of his Ministry’s scorecard during President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration, 2015-2023. This is the inaugural edition of this series.
The second Niger Bridge project connects the South-East with the rest of the country. The project and its link roads are expected to be 46.9km long, connecting Asaba (Delta State) and Onitsha (Anambra State).
The project also involves the Construction of 1.6km bridge over the River Niger and the construction of 10.3km approach roads from Asaba and Onitsha.
