FRI, JUNE 22 2018-theG&BJournal-It was all to play for in the second half of the game after a pulsating first 45 minutes that saw Iceland take more shots at goal while Nigeria controlled possessions in the midfield.
The Super Eagles held the mid-field play firmly but made little impact from their goal ward approach with just a hand full of wayward shots across the face of Iceland goal post. The attacking foray of Iceland was troubling and Nigeria again struggled to deal with set pieces.
Brown Idowu was replaced in the second half. Five minutes later, a quick counter, a quick pass from Kelechi Ihanacho to Victor Moses, a cross and Ahmed Musa met it in the box and put Nigeria ONE up with a sublime strike.
56 minutes Wilfred Ndidi riffled a long shot that was parried over by the goal keeper. 75 minutes later a brilliant solo run by Ahmed Musa saw him leave the entire Iceland defence on the floor to net his second goal of the tournament.
Iceland was gifted a penalty in the 81st minute. But they blew their chance, ballooning the ball high into the sky to keep the game tight at 2-0. Ihancho was replaced in the 84th minute by Idion Ighalo after he miscued a shot 10 yards from goal.
87th minute Uzohio pulled off a wonderful save from Segurdson. 89th minute Iwobi came in for Oghenekaro.
Most remarkable was the team captain, Mikel Obi who picked up an injury in the injury time of extra time to see Nigeria roll over Iceland for the victory. 2-0 it finished.
