…APC laments collapse of moves to settle political rift

FRI, DEC 15 2023-theGBJournal|A raft of Rivers State Commissioners serving under the Governor Siminalayi Fubara have resigned their appointments, most citing personal reasons, and just as move to reconcile governor Fubara and former Governor Wike broke down.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs Inime Chinwenwo Aguma on Thursday resigned as cabinet member in the administration.

In her letter of resignation, Mrs Aguma cited as reasons for dumping the government, personal and other commitments informing her decision.

While she served in that office as commissioner, a position she had held since the administration of Nyesom Wike, she also was a member of the governing board of the Rivers State University.

She was also a members of the Rivers State Flood Management Committee.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom has also sent in his letter of resignation.

He announced to withdraw his service to Rivers people as commissioner in the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Prof Mmom’s resignation now numbers among many other resignation letters that had sprang from other cabinet members.

Commissioner for Works in the administration, Dr. Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly has sent in his letter of resignation as well.

The decision to resign, he said was taken after deep retrospection on the reasons that are anchored on conscience, personal philosophy and professional ethics.

His letter of resignation, would be the third in the series of such resignations on Thursday.

The Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu has also made public his resignation from the administration of governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Eleven Commissioners so far has dumped the Fubura administration including Dr. Jacob Nbina, Charles Amadi, Chukwuemeka Woke, Nwafor Uchechuku as well as Zacchaeus Adoaongor among others.

River State has been embroiled in crisis following power tussle between state actors including former Governor Nyesom Wike, now FCT Minister.

The infighting has lead to demolition of the State House of Assembly and the defection of 27 State House of Assembly members, royal to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The conflict has also created uncertainty and stalled government business.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State chapter, says it is disheartening that the efforts have failed made by President Bola Tinubu to settle the political rift between the Minister of Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Tony Okocha is the caretaker committee chairman of APC in Rivers State and he voiced his lamentation at a press conference that held at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.

Okocha, who clarified that he was not part of those in attendance during the President’s intervention team but asserted strongly that the move to reconcile governor Fubara and Wike has broken down.

“I wasn’t part of it, but whatever that was, it has broken down, and it has been broken irreconcilably.”

The Rivers APC caretaker committee chairman said that his party is already wooing Wike to leave the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and defect to APC, which will make him the leader of the party in Rivers State.

“We are here to tell the world that we stand with the lawmakers. What they did is not an aberration. Defection is not new. In 2014, the PDP was run aground and the members left in droves to the opposing party.

“The PDP in Rivers has imploded and we are benefiting from the reward. We are telling the governor he cannot thrive on illegalities. I have given instruction to the legal adviser to petition the NJC to report the judge for delivering that ‘Jankara’ judgment.”
