Tightened security around the Emir’s Palace as tension builds in Kano

SAT MAY 25 2024-theGBJournal| Kano people are now trapped in a conflict not of their making. Some have taken sides with the now deposed Emir, HRH Aminu Ado Bayero and others with reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi 11 as both struggle to control the Kano Emirate stool.

The Kano Emirate struggle has its roots in the unceremonious deposition of Muhammadu Sanusi 11 in 2020 by the former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who subsequently created four additional Emirates with Emirs that he deliberately vested equal powers on.

Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir, arrived Kano 4.30 am this morning, unclear his mission, and welcomed by his supporters.

Muhammadu Sanusi 11 had arrived at the Emirs Palace by 2.25 am accompanied by the State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who handed him certificate of reinstatement on Friday alongside his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Jubril Falgore.

One influential group in the State, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has urged all its members to move to the Emir Palace where Muhammadu Sanusi 11, is located, to prevent the return of Aminu Ado Bayero, a reflection of the tension that is building up in the ancient, historic city.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, has denied it has received any order to arrest the 15th Emir. The denial eased the tension but sent a strong signal that the situation is gradually deteriorating.

The earlier report said that Governor Yusuf ordered the immediate arrest of Aminu Ado Bayero, accusing him of igniting tension in the state. It is said that the Governor also gave him 48 hours to vacate the throne and go into exile.

The Kano Police Command have now provided contact numbers for reporting any potential spurs for civil unrest, and issued warning to all individuals, groups, and political factions to respect the court’s ruling and maintain the state’s peaceful environment.

It is unclear which court order the Command is referring to. However, on Thursday, a Federal High Court in Kano issued an order to stop Kano State Government from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi 11.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, earlier this morning hurried to the Command Headquarter in company of the Nigerian Army Brigade Commander with representatives from Navy, Air Force and other security agencies, to provide an update on the situation.

It is unclear how the tussle will play out but observers are convinced that resolving the impasse will depend solely on effective leadership.
