WED 09 FEB, 2022-theGBJournal- The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) said Tuesday that the ‘’limited quantity’’ of the impacted petroleum product circulating the country- reason for the current scarcity-has been isolated and withdrawn from the market.
According to NMDPRA, the contamination is as a result of the presence of abnormal quantity of methanol above Nigeria’s specification, discovered in the supply chain.
Methanol is a regular additive in petrol and usually blended in an adequate quantity.
NMDPRA noted in a statement seen by theGBJournal, that already loaded trucks and those in transit has also been recalled to ensure vehicular and equipment safety.
The contaminated fuel began circulating this week from filling stations that unknowingly stocked the product, causing damages to generators and to vehicles. Many consumers violently confronted marketers and petrol station attendants, accusing them of knowingly selling fake product.
NMDPRA said the source supplier has now been identified and ‘’further commercial and appropriate actions shall be taken by the Authority and the NNPC Limited.
Meanwhile, the regulator said the NNPC Ltd and oil marketing companies have been directed to sustain sufficient distribution of petrol in all retail outlets nationwide. It said the NNPC has also intensified efforts at increasing the supply of petrol into the market in order to bridge any unforeseen supply gap.
