Professor Tijjani Mohammad Bande to succeed Espinosa Garces as UN General Assembly President

TUE, MAY 07 2019-theG&BJournal- Visiting United Nations (UN) diplomat, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces today announced the appointment of Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Professor Tijjani Mohammad Bande, as the next President of UN General Assembly. He takes over from Espinosa Garces when term her expires.

Espinosa Garces announced the appointment in company of Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama shortly after her meeting with Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari in the State House Abuja.

The UN envoy arrived Nigeria Monday to have a bilateral meeting with President Buhari on the transition to the 74th Presidency of the UN General Assembly, strengthening multilateralism, Nigeria’s role and initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as role in achieving regional peace and security.

Professor Bande was the Vice-Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto between 2004 and 2009. He holds a masters degree in Political Science from the Boston Univeristy, Massachusetts, USA and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada

Bande, a former director-general of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State will be presiding over General Assembly, one of the six organs of the UN, the only organ where all 193 members States have equal representation.
