WED DEC 24 2025-theGBJournal| The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government has began talks of a bold and forward-thinking plan to modernize 50 percent of Nigeria’s textile production capacity within the next five years, marking a major milestone in the administration’s industrial revival agenda.
The discussion underscores the government’s determination to restore Nigeria’s once-thriving textile industry and position it as a key pillar of economic growth and job creation.
Nigeria’s textile sector, which previously employed hundreds of thousands of citizens, has long struggled with outdated machinery, inconsistent power supply, and unfair competition from imported textiles.
The President Tinubu administration’s modernization drive represents a clear commitment to reversing this decline through technology upgrades, improved infrastructure, and targeted policy support for local manufacturers.
The Presidency said the move fits squarely within the APC government’s broader economic reform strategy aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing overdependence on oil revenues.
”By revitalizing the textile value chain, the Federal Government is strengthening linkages between cotton farmers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, thereby creating sustainable livelihoods and boosting local productivity.”
The modernization plan also reinforces the administration’s strong support for local content and the “Made-in-Nigeria” initiative.
By empowering domestic textile producers to meet global standards, the government is reducing reliance on imports, conserving foreign exchange, and restoring confidence in Nigerian-made fabrics at home and abroad.
Beyond economic gains, the textile revival carries significant social benefits. Many textile hubs are located in regions with high unemployment rates, and their revival will provide meaningful jobs for youths and women, reduce poverty, and promote balanced regional development across the country.
As reforms continue to take root, the initiative stands as a strong testament to the President Tinubu’s administration’s resolve to rebuild critical industries, empower Nigerians, and secure a resilient and self-sustaining national economy.
