President Tinubu, Otedola, AfDB President Adesina, business leaders in shock after official confirmation of Herbert Wigwe’s death

SUN, FEB 11 2024-theGBJournal|”I am shocked and deeply distressed by the news of the passing of Mr. Herbert Wigwe, a distinguished banker, humanitarian, and entrepreneur, and Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, along with members of the Wigwe family – Herbert’s wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi,” says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after receiving the official confirmation of the demise of Herbert Wigwe, the founding Group Chief Executive Officer and former Group Managing Director of its flagship subsidiary, Access Bank Plc.

Wigwe died, his wife and son as well as Ogunbanjo died on Friday in a helicopter crash in the California desert near Nevada border.

The President said their passing is an overwhelming tragedy that is shocking beyond comprehension.

”I extend my condolences to the Wigwe and Ogunbanjo families, the business community, and all those impacted by this harrowing incident.”

Billionaire philanthropist and Executive Chairman of Geregu Power Plc, Femi Otedola, shared a photo of the banking genius Wigwe with Aliko Dangote when ”Herbie and his wife hosted them to a dinner at his newly built home in Lagos ,” exactly two weeks ago,” to underscore his grief.

He wrote on X handle, ”I am shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of a banking genius Herbert Wigwe, his dear wife Chizob and first son Chizi.”

”Herbie, we will miss you. Your legacy will live on forever.”

The Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi described Wigwe as ”my dear friend” and sad his deeply saddened of ”by the tragic news of his passing alongside his wife and son.

”He was a visionary and brilliant banker,” the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Akinwumi a. Adesina said in his condolence message.

”May God comfort your aged parents, children, wigwe family and the staff and management of Access Bank. You will be greatly missed.”

The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Wigwe as ”the King of visionary and disruptive ideas.”

”Herbert was not just a brother and visionary leader but one of the brightest minds in Africa. His impact on our nation and beyond will be remembered forever. My heart mourns,” Sanwo-Olu said.
