THUR, MARCH 05 2020-theG&BJournal- Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwo, CFR, retires from the Court of Appeal, Nigeria on 6 March 2020 as the 6th President of the Court.
A strong advocate of the creation of more divisions of the Court to improve access to justice, the 69 year old law graduate of the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria was appointed as Justice, Court of Appeal in 1998 and rose to become the President, Court of Appeal in April 2014.
Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwo recently commissioned the Gombe Division of the Court, bringing the total number of the divisions of the Court to 20.
She is a member of numerous professional bodies and served on various judicial committees as well.
Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed today was among the special dignitaries who attended the valedictory Court session and reception in of the retiring justice.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Hon. Justice M.B. Dongban Mensem as the Acting President of the Court of Appeal for an initial period of three months, with effect from March 6, 2020, when the incumbent, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwo would statutorily retire from service.
According to the Presidency, Justice Dongban Mensem, who is next most senior judge will be acting pending when a substantive appointment to the position maybe made by President Buhari subject to the confirmation of the Senate.
The President’s approval of Mensem’s appointment followed recommendation of the Chief Justice of the Federation in line with the provisions of Section 238 (4) and (5) of the 1999 constitution as amended.
