WED, 16 DEC, 2020-theGBJournal- President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the immediate opening of four land borders-the Seme, Illela, Maigatari and Mfun borders.
The President had hinted in August 2020 about ‘’looking into reopening the borders as soon as possible ‘’now that the message has sunk in with our neighbours,’’ following his meeting with State Governors where he explained the rationale for the closure of Nigeria’s land borders.
He told the Governors the closure was partly ‘’an attempt to control the smuggling in weapons and drugs.’’
The border reopening was approved today during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, in which the President participated virtually from Daura.
The Federal Government shut the country’s land borders in August 2019 arguing that the decision was taken to effectively put an end to smuggling particularly of rice and frozen chicken from Benin Republic.
